Motion Graphics and Compositing Final Project

INSTRUCTION

Week 12

We are finally at the end of this semester. For our final project for this module, we will need to come out with a theme and create an abstract motion. 2D/3D, mixed media, or any experimental visual output are allowed. To come out with a theme is always the hardest as it will decide the quality of work. As I remember what my foundation lecturer told us, a good artwork always has a good story and meaning behind it.

To come out with a good theme, I started to think about what is happening around me currently. And I realized that people nowadays are too stressed. People are chasing for money, working very hard, students chasing good grades. Now we are having a pandemic and it made this case even worst. Suddenly, it reminds me of Mr. Ernesto who pulled me out from my darkest time. He is also a fine art artist who drew a lot of abstract art. At this moment, I ask myself why not try something "really abstract" with the theme related to life? Then, I came out with the theme " Life is Abstract".

After decided the theme, I started to do some research on articles that related to abstract and life. I also did some research on the meaning of abstracts so that my content will not out of topic. Below are the articles which is helpful for me:

Also, I found a very interesting and meaningful quote by Sudhir Kumar Duppati.

"When you look at your own life in a day, it's definitely abstract. When you look at your day, you might do 20 different things in a day, which may or may not relate to each other. But we try and make sense of it. So how abstract is that?”

Then, I started to collect some references of artistry, color theme, and video that can be applied to my work. As I'm gonna make it in abstract art style, I also collected some fine art artwork that related to stress and life. I compile all of them into my slide so that I can present them to my lecturer.

After all the planning, I started to sketch some ideas. Fg.1.0 shows my sketches and I was quite worried about it as it is my first time doing abstract artwork.

Fg.1.0 Sketches of my scenes

Before I started digitizing and animating my scene, I had a consultation with Mr.Fauzi in this week's class. Even though we are rushing, but I know that I can't start the work without approval from Mr.Fauzi. Or else, if Mr.Fauzi rejects my theme, all the effort that I put in will be wasted.

After presenting my slide to Mr.Fauzi, he says that my presentation slide is a very powerful portfolio. He also compliments my sketch as a masterpiece and he even suggests me frame it on my wall. At this moment I suddenly feel confident about my work, before that, I was quite worried. However, he asked me to keep on practice on this, my work is already presentable in the industry but he wants me to be better.

Week 13

I decided to start my first draft and complete this work as fast as I can. It was really a stressful week as there is so many final project came together. After I digitized my first scene and import to Adobe After Effects, I realized that the parts outside the artboard are being cut.

Fg.1.1 Progression in Adobe Illustrator

In this case, I went back to AI and expand the artboard. I need to make sure all the elements that I need are in the artboard.

Fg.1.2 Progression in Adobe Illustrator (Fit in)

The same progression was repeated until I came out with my first draft. Below is my first draft:

After finishing this draft, I figure out a lot of weaknesses and I decided to list out the weakness in my slide and maybe I can get some suggestions from Mr.Fauzi.
  1. The BGM may not fit the video well
  2. Last scene “Life is always easy” color doesn’t look nice
During this week's class, I show my first draft to Mr.Fauzi and he agrees with the weakness that I found. Other than that, he also suggests me to remove all the words in this video except the ending. From what I understand from this, the reason for doing this is to make the audience enjoy the visual and try to understand it. Only show the message at the end of the video, so that the audience will keep watching. He also suggested me to remove some scenes and reuse some scene. He showed me some good examples that really fit the style that I'm applying for this project. Below is one of the examples that he showed me:

From the video, what I get from my observation is I can keep reusing some scenes for my work but play with zoom in or out. It will reduce my workload but it is still meaningful. The same scene but play with a different camera angle will make it look like a different scene too. I feel like I learned quite a lot from today's consultation.

Week 14

This is my last edit of my work before my final presentation. First of all, I get a new soundtrack from Storyblocks. Below is the new soundtrack that I'm going to apply for my work:

When I was listening to the soundtrack, I started to imagine my scenes and I came out with an Idea which is adding glitch effects. So, I went to YouTube and get some tutorials. There is a lot of tutorial video teaching how to make glitch effects and I choose the most simple way to it as we are running out of time. Below are the tutorial video that I found easier to understand:

Then, I started to make the glitch effect in Adobe After Effects by following the video step by step. Fg.1.3 shows my progression on Adobe After Effects:

Fg.1.3 Progression of creating glitch effect in AE

After all of that, I started to play with the scene based on Mr. Fauzi's feedback. I quite enjoyed while editing the video with the new soundtrack. The glitch effect does create impact for the artwork and I feel quite successful. However, the camera angle can still be improved but it is already presentable if time is limited. Below is my second attempt:

Also, we going to have our final presentation this week. Luckily I had updated my slide with all my progression. This is the first time that I did my final presentation without practicing but I can still feel my confidence. I feel like I have improved in presentation. Below is my presentation slide:

My presentation was all good until when I wanted to show my Final outcome. The video can't play with sound even though I changed the browser. The soundtrack of my work is quite important, without the soundtrack the audience can't feel the impact and it will not be a good work. However, the problem was solved as Mr.Fauzi showed the video from his side with the link I send him.

Mr.Fauzi says that he can see all what I was trying to explain during my presentation. Which means I did explain clearly. Also, he compliment that my work does improve a lot compared to the previous version and there is some scenes he really likes it. Eventho this is our final presentation, but Mr.Fauzi still give us time to do some minor edit. He suggested me to change the glitch effect color as the blue makes my scene to have too much color. Also, for the words in first scene, it will be better if I make them all in capital letters as they will have the same height which looks tidier. Also, he suggested me to removed two unnecessary scenes to shorten my video.

Below is my final outcome for this project:

The color of the glitch effect has been edited, the words are all in capital letters, and those unnecessary scenes have been removed. Finally, I have completed this module, and I am really grateful to be Mr.Fauzi's student. I have learned a lot throughout this module. All the lessons are really memorable especially in the first week I misunderstood the instruction given.

The most important thing that I learned from Mr. Fauzi's class is never afraid to reuse the same element, always apply what we have learned, and keep on practice all the work that we have done!
