Week 14

As I have done animating the character, this week I started to build up the props that I need. My scene is suitable to locate in a room like a laboratory and projection is a must to match the hand movement. To create the projection, I will need to go to Adobe Illustrator and draw them out. I drew a few different designs so that the scene won't look that bored. Fg.1.0 shows my progression on Adobe Illustrator:

Then I create an image plane in Maya and import those PNG projection vector that I did to the image plane. This is one of the ways to put in references images when we want to build a 3D object. And I just play around with the opacity to make the projection half transparency.

After that, I started to build some simple furniture to match the scenario. The reason for doing this is to make the whole animation looks more interesting and the audience will have more things to see. All the things were built by myself and below are my progression:

Fg.1.2 Building more Furniture

After that, I realized that the lights are not that good. So I decided to set up my own lighting. From Fg.1.3 and Fg.1.4, you can see the difference after I adding the lights by myself. I added a total of 3 lights, blue, white, and orange.

Fg.1.4 After setting up own lights

After setting up everything I started to render the whole scene. When I thought that finally, the nightmare has come to the end, the problem comes again. The character model is built with the wrong material which makes him look like iron.

Fg.1.5 Character model material problem

When this happens, I really don't know what to do. I went to text my lecturer and ask for help. He suggests me to change the material if cannot then just leave it like that. I found that I can actually change the character material with hypershade but it is a bit challenging because not all materials are named. Even I changed the material, the rendering still look weird and I have no idea with it anymore.

Lastly, I decided to use Maya render to render the whole animation. Even though Arnold renderer can provide a more realistic animation but in my case, I think the looking of the character is more important than realistic. Hence, I came out with my final outcome:

Below is my final presentation slide:

For me, 3D animation is not that hard to understand. We need to understand the human anatomy well so that the character's movement won't look weird. The most challenging problem that I face was the model rigging, there is a lot of problems with the model and finally, I have done with it. I really like the final outcome and when I watching it I feel like all the effort does worth it. Even though, I understand that there is more detail that I can still improve my animation but I think I have done my best to complete this in few weeks.
