Motion Graphics and Compositing Project 3

INSTRUCTION

Week 9

For this project, we are going to explore channel identity. We can use back our project 2 and add on some content. From what I understand, the difference between channel bumper and channel identity is channel bumper is just an intro but channel identity is an intro with content.

To keep the consistency, I will apply the same font (Arista font) and color choices as in project 2. For channel identity, we will need to show some content of the channel so that the audience can understand what the channel going to show. So, I added few selected sketches of my illustration that I did before. Below are the selected illustration:

As I was suggested by Mr.Fauzi to take some references from Nickelodeon channel identity, I did some study on it. I found some old Nickelodeon channel bumper and channel identity from YouTube and I observe them carefully to see how they improve. Below are the video and what I observed from the video:

A Nickelodeon Bumper/Ident from Each Year (1977-2021)

1994
Started to mix around 2D and 3D and also playing with stop motion animation.

1999
Applying all the most famous cartoon characters that can represent Nickelodeon.

2009
Started to focus on 3D Typography and design in a cleaner style (shapes).

2012
Whole channel bumper is made in 3D except for some 2D animation Characters.

2017
Looks like applying a short story.

Nickelodeon IDs (2010)

  • Much more modern
  • Not too many elements compare to the old one which makes it cleaner.

0:00 to 0:55 parts are too boring for kids but they are good motion graphics.
( This is based on what I think when I was a child, I spend almost the whole day watching cartoon)

Other than Nickelodeon, I also did some research on Cartoon Network channel identity. Below is a video that I found very useful.

After some research and learning, I started to draw my storyboard. I feel like the idea comes easier after observe at Nickelodeon channel identity, and it is really interesting to see how their channel identity develops.

Then, I compile everything in Google Slide as my proposal to present. (Slide after storyboard were added after Week 9) Below is my slide:

Week 10

After presented my proposal to Mr.Fauzi, my work was approved but I was requested to make an animatic. Mr.Fauzi also says that there is always a scene we like the most and we can put more effort into that scene to grab the audience's attention. In my case, the milk box scene will be the best choice.

Since I already draw the arrow to show the movement in the storyboard, Mr.Fauzi says that I can just do something like a slide show as an animatic. That's because he can already understand the movement. Hence, I did a very simple animatic.

As my work has already been approved, I started to make a draft for this project. I was kind of worrying because it is already Week 10 but we haven't started our final project. Before I started the draft, I open up all the Ai files of my illustration that I need and arrange the layer properly. That is because the time when I drew them, I didn't know the importance of layering. Fg.2.0 and Fg.2.1 show my progression on relayering and renaming:

Fg.2.1 Re-Layering and Re-Naming

Then I import all the files to Adobe After Effects and start compositing.

Week 11

This week, we showed Mr.Fauzi our draft. As my first draft was not export, I show my work in After Effects to Mr.Fauzi through the share screen. Mr.Fauzi says that, since I put a lot of effort into the milk box scene, why not try to reuse the elements from there, for example, the cereal. Mr.Fauzi guides me on how to create a transition by reusing the cereal during the class. Also, he teaches us how to make the composition bg to transparent. Other than that, he also teaches us how to replace the certain object with the object that already set up keyframe. (ALT+ drag to the object that we want to replace).

Then, I come out with my second draft:

Week 11

This week is the submission week for Project 3 but before we submit, we have our last consultation. Mr.Fauzi says that my channel bumper looks good and it allows the audience to keep on watching the whole video. The only thing that I'm lack of is the co-direction. I have learned this in Interactive Design but forgot to apply in this project. Co-direction is like what we want the audience to do, subscribe to your channel? Visit your website? or even Follow your Instagram and FB page. In my case, my co-direction is to visit my Instagram page, so I will need to add a name tag at the end of the video. With the name tag, it allows and remind the audience to search my Instagram. Below is my final outcome for this project.

I feel really happy to look at this. Even though the lecturer says that it is already good, but I am clear that there is still something I can improve. The lecturer does not want us to spend more time on this project because our time is really limited. We should start focus on the final project.
