INSTRUCTION

Week 6

For project 2, we are going to make a channel bumper. From what I understand, channel bumper is something like the starting of video. Usually, there will be an opening scene. Before we start doing it, we will need to create a moodboard as usual. Theme, references, color theme, and storyboard should be included. Based on the instruction given in MIB, the format of the video should be mp4, h2.54, 16:9 (1440 x 1080), 25fps, ACC, 48kHz.

When the lecturer was explaining to us about this project, I have already an idea in my mind. I'm going to create a channel bumper for my studio "Junny Studio". I have planned this for a long time but never start it. Since there will be an expertise supervision us doing this, I think it will be a very good chance for me to finish my plan.

Before I start the project, I wanted to redesign a logo for Junny Studio as I think my old logo is not mature enough. I was trying to apply the new knowledge that I have learned in this class (golden ratio). However, it looks like I'm still not so sure how to work with the golden ratio while designing a logo.

I was not so sure about my new logo so I went to get some comments from my friends. My friends say that it looks more like a fox than a Husky and the two "n" look like a "m". They also say that the old one looks much more suitable for my studio. After collecting their feedback, I decided to go back to my old logo and just refine it. Below is the comparison of my old and new logo:

After the first step, I went to YouTube and Pinterest to collect some references. From YouTube, I realized that I can get references from searching animated logos too. Below is the video that I think will be helpful for me. (references from Pinterest can be seen in my moodboard)

Before I start to draw my storyboard, I also decided on my color theme. Since Junny Studio's mascot is a Husky, greyscale will be a good choice (in my opinion). So I decided to use the greyscale in this project. Next, I started to do some sketches and digitize them straight away on the storyboard. Fg.1.2 shows my storyboard.

After finished all the preproduction steps, I compile them all together in Google Slide and Submit them to Google classroom. Below is my slide:

Week 7

There will be no class for this week as there is a Hari Raya public holiday. However, we started to make some draft for our project 2 based on our storyboard. Without considering anything, I straight away starts the draft on After Effects with my basic knowledge about this software. Below is my first draft:

After finishing my first draft, I feel like the whole thing looks really flat and it is not interesting. I also realize that the layer of my element in Adobe Illustrator has to arrange nicely so that I can animate them better in After Effects. However, to get more professional feedback, I have to wait for the next class.

Week 8

There is no class this week due to a public holiday.

Week 9

As there is a class replacement this week, so we have two days of Motion Graphic class this Week.

Tuesday

This week, our lecturer reviewed our draft and give us some feedback one by one. His comment for my draft was, he can see that I did not arrange my file properly in After Effects. I just straight away mixed up the whole composition and this will cause me a big problem if there is something I need to change. I will need to animation them part by part but not at once.

The other thing is, from my references most of the motions logo have around 5 to 6 seconds but mine is only 2 to 4, I will need to do something on this. Other than that, he also agrees with me that my character looks too stiff, and he suggested me to make more facial expression or make the expression more obvious.

After collecting some useful feedback from the lecturer, I started to proceed with my draft 2. In draft 2, I added the BGM and some sound effects. Below is my draft 2:

I basically redo the whole thing as my file was not arranging in the proper way and it is already messed up. At this time, I follow the lecturer's instructions and arrange them properly. I animated them part by part and arrange them in different files. Fg.1.3 shows how I arrange my composition and files:

Thursday

I showed my second draft to the lecturer as usual, and I received some more detailed feedback that I think they are really true and will help me to improve my work. The first thing is that, the way that the word "husky" and "illustration" enter the screen should start from "h" for husky and "i" for illustration. This allows the audience to read. The lecturer told me that, when the audience sees words, they want to read.

The other thing is that the lecturer suggests me to make the logo bounce instead of just let it appear like that since my logo looks bounce. After editing my draft based on the feedback given, I came up with my third draft. Below is my third draft:

Before the class end, I showed my draft to the lecturer and he says that my work has improved and he is glad to see that I am learning from the mistake that I have done. As I'm always curious about why are we using this 1440x1080 as screen size instead of 1920x1080 For me, it doesn't looks good on YouTube, so I asked the lecturer. He told me that 1440x1080 is the half HD size and 1920x1080 is the full HD. Then he asked us to change it to 1920x1080.

I actually adjusted a lot of things since some of the elements' position is changed caused by the screen is become longer. And finally below is my fourth draft:

Week 10

Finally, my work has been approved, but there is still something that I can improve. I told the lecturer that I think the character is still not that vivid enough. I think for a while and he gave me a suggestion which is adding sound for the character. I told the lecturer that I'm facing a lot of issues if I need to make Junny sound. One of the reasons that I was not prepared to make a voice for Junny is that I always wanted to make Junny good at expressing himself without talking.

Then, the lecturer gave me another suggestion which is just to add some sound effects for Junny. He showed me some examples on YouTube and also given me the keyword to get the sound. The keyword is "Cartoon sound SFX". I feel really inspired and feel like finally found what is lack of for all my previous draft!

Below is my final version of Project 2, Junny Studio Channel bumper:

I feel really happy and satisfied to look at the final version. From this week's feedback, I have learned that I need to solve problems from different angles, but not staying at the same angle that I can't fix. Instead of blaming myself have enough time to animate Junny with a more exaggerated feel, I should consider adding sound effects to make it look more vivid.
