LECTURE

Week 1

26/8/2020
For this sem, we are supposed to attend the physical class but only two of us are able to attend. The others were attending the class through Zoom meeting. In the first class, Mr.Martin gave us a brief on all the exercises and projects. We were also being told that the final project of this module will be combining with Animation Fundamental Final Projects. The reason for doing this is because we can explore to combine the skills that we learned from this module to form a short animation.

28/8/2019
In today's class, Mr.Martin show us a short animation in the class. The short animation is called "Song of the rain". Below is the full video:

After watched the video, we were asked to figure out the theme of this short animation. What is this animation about? Most of us agree that the theme of this animation is about friendship. In this animation, the main character, a young boy met a strange little fox collecting water in the rain. He went to help the fox without suspicion. This action does show the pureness of a kid. After they complete collecting rainwater, the fox went back to its place. The young boy starts to miss him and he hopes to meet the fox again even they only know each other for only one day.

Other than that, Mr.Martin also explained to us the differences between story and plot. Mr.Martin also mentioned that animation wit different themes suit different types of artstyle. We were having a small exercise in the class which allows us to match the theme and artstyle. Before we end the class, we were given some exercise to complete before next week.

Week 2

2/9/2020
This week, we learned about the importance of theme and characters in storytelling. Theme is the main idea or point of a story, for example, love, friendship, betrayal, death, and so on. We do not need to think about the theme but when we are watching it, the theme had already formed in our mind. We also watched a "What If" video by Disney animator on YouTube. The reason for doing this is to unlock our brain, break the logic so that we can think something out of the box. Due to out of time, we will continue the character part on Friday class.

4/9/2020
In today's class, we continue with learning the character in animation. Character animation is a specialized area of the animation process, which involves bringing animated characters to life. (From Wikipedia). A character can be understood through its external and internal performances. To develop an animation, we can either start from character or the world. The story can be always come from our memory or idea, but the initial idea will not be the best.

INSTRUCTION

EXERCISES

 Week 1

We were given some exercise:

  1. We need to think of a memory that comes to us easily. Hence, we need to speak it out like we are sharing it with our friend. Then record what we said and submit it to Mr.Martin. Other than that, we will also need to provide a written version.

  2. We need to choose one of our favorite animations. Barely introduce the animation and analyze the theme of the story. Also how the protagonist's journey is told in relation to the theme.
Below is my written version of  my memory and the slide that I created for my favorite animation:

Week 2

This week's exercise is just answering some questions provided in the lecture slides. This exercise is related to our previous exercise which is our favorite animation.
