PROJECT 2

Week 8

We are going to start our final project soon, so we were asked to finish project 2 by week 9. There are a few things we need to do for this project. Firstly, we need to create an A3 poster by applying our key artwork from project 1. Then we need to create a social media invite (200mm x 200mm). After these two, we have to complete the final two collateral (T-Shirt/Tote Bag/Pin Badge Set) next week, Week 10. Below is the content provided by the lecturer:

or
The ABCs of Bauhaus Design Theory (CHIOOSEN)
or

At first, I was thinking to create a very clean and tidy poster and I did some research to get some references. I found some styles that might fit my key artwork. Fg.1.1 shows one of my references for the poster. Then I started to work on the poster. Fg.1.2 shows my first and second attempts for A3 poster design.

Week 9

This week, we were given feedback for the A3 poster design. Also, we were asked to finish the poster as fast as we can and then start to work on the final two collateral. So that we will have enough time for the final project. After collecting some feedback from the lecturers, I started my third attempt.

After the third attempt, I contact Mr.Vinod through messenger and ask for some feedback. Mr.Vinod says that my key artwork needs to be bigger and right now my non-objective elements seem to be dominating the artwork even though I have reduced the tonality. He suggested me to try on using the text to hold the composition then only add on the non-objective elements to support layout.

Then, I try to come out with a new key artwork because I wanna create something that non-objective element is not that strong. Fg.1.5 shows my new key artwork on the poster.

Hence, I went to inbox Mr.Vinod again to get another feedback. This time he suggests me to try adding a tittle dynamism. If it does not work, then just continue with what I have. Mr.Vinod also guide me to arrange and align the content which I really appreciate. Fg.1.6 shows my new poster based on feedback given by Mr.Vinod.

After the poster, we were asked to finish a 200x200mm social media invite GIF in this week. Below is my working progression on Adobe Photoshop and my final outcome.

Week 10

This week, the lecturer started the class by checking our progression on project 2. He gave us feedback one by one as usual. Unfortunately, I missed the chance to listen to feedback from the lecturer because I was having connection issues. When I went back to the class, I checked through FB live and I realize I had missed my turn. Anyway, from the live stream, it sounds like the lecturers are happy with my GIF. Mr.Vinod says that I did animate the GIF well even tho the poster looks average.

We were asked to show 2 collateral artwork if we have done it. I started to design my collateral artwork during the class. Mr.Vinod was questioning why everyone is designing Tshirt and tote bag even though there is more products we can play with. So, I decided not to design Tshirt but a flag. I found a white flag image and I decided to put my key artwork on it by using Adobe photoshop.

First, I desaturate the image and adjust the contrast. Then I saved it as a PSD file. This step is to allow Photoshop to sense the highlight and shadow of this image so that I can distort my key artwork base on the texture and the flow of the flag. Below is my progression on Adobe Photoshop.

For my second collateral product, I decided to design a tote bag. From the feedback given by Mr.Vinod to everyone, we are supposed to play with the key artwork while designing the collateral. We should not just keep using the exact same key artwork for all collateral. Then I edited a little bit of my key artwork based on my animated key artwork (Fg.1.9 Social media invitation GIF). I actually edited it based on their movement in the GIF.

FEEDBACK

Week 8

General Feedback:
We were suggested to show our work to others and see either it is readable.

Specific Feedback:
I need to rearrange the word "the" and the word "and" should not exist as it does not appear in the title provided. If the arrangement does not work, I will need to come out with a new design.

Week 9

Specific Feedback:
The colours should be primary colour but my yellow looks a bit greenish. Mr.Shamsul says that my poster looks clean and tidy. Mr.Vinod says my poster doesn't align well. They both agree that I need to explore more.

Mr.Vinod says that my key artwork needs to be bigger and right now my non-objective elements seem to be dominating the artwork even though I have reduced the tonality. He suggested me to try on using the text to hold the composition then only add on the non-objective elements to support layout.

Week 10

Specific Feedback:
Mr. Vinod suggests me to try adding a tittle dynamism. If it does not work, then just continue with what I have. Mr.Vinod also guide me to arrange and align the content. Mr.Vinod says that my GIF does animated well even thought my poster is just average.

REFLECTION

Week 8

Observation:
Somehow I feel like we are really in a rush and we have to work faster so that we will have enough time for the final project. Some of us are still stuck at key artwork as their key artwork is still not accepted by the lecturer. Some of us even continue with the poster even they still not sure what is their key artwork. This caused their work to get rejected and they were asked to go back to key artwork.

Finding:
For this project, we have to follow the steps and understand what is required. We need a proper key artwork before we move to the next step.

Week 9

Observation:
I realize that if we really understand the feedback given by the lecturer, our work will be improving very well. I feel like I learned the most in this week as I got a lot of specific feedback and suggestions from the lecturer. At the same time, I feel kind of stress too as it shows that my work is really bad and I need to improve more.

Finding:
The feedback and suggestions given by the lecturer will be really helpful to improve our work if we are clear about it. This week, I felt really stress and I have a talk to my mother and she told me to not stress myself and just try my best, that will be enough.

Week 10

Observation:
Looks like everyone is really stressing about projects for all module. There are really tons of projects for us in these few weeks as we are at the end of sem now. Some of them even didn't show any progress in the class. The lecturer looks a bit worrying and headache.

Finding:
I feel like we as the student should balance the time used on each project and the quality of our work. We should not be too focused on one project but finish other projects randomly. Somehow I feel like the expectation of the lecturers are too high for us as not all of us are good in specific subjects. Again, time management is really important for us as a student, we should try our best to come out with good work but don't stress or force ourselves.

FURTHER READING

fonts: background
A short introduction to font characteristics by Maarten Gelderman

This is a research report but not an ebook. For me, I will say its a bit boring because it is just text but less image or example shown. But I have to say that it was written in a professional way and very informative. I did learn something from here.

This paper was dissected into few sections which are element differences, the dimensions of a typeface design, some more complex dimensions, additional aspects of contrast, from characteristics to classification, and lastly some implications.

There are some interesting facts stated in this paper. For example, the paper stated that generally, designers agree that text set in Roman is more legible than text set in Italic, although the readability of Italics accompanying different fonts may differ considerably.
