Final Project

Week 10

For our last project of this module, we will need to create a typeface intended to solve a problem or it can be experimental. The pdf below shows my 3 ideas for this project.

Week 11

This week we show our ideas to the lecturer so that the lecturer can give us some suggestions and comments. From Mr.Vinod, I should not change the Star Wars font, because it is the movie's specific font, or else the people will hate me forever. No much feedback for idea 2 and the third idea also doesn't work. Mr.Vinod also says that I can continue with the second idea but it will be lame. I was trying to come out with a new idea but I couldn't as I'm running out of time. We need to work fast, so I decided to continue with the second idea. Below is my sketch for idea 2:

Fg.1.0 Sketch for Idea 2

To keep them consistent, I added paws element for all the alphabets. I try to applied husky's tail for the alphabets too. After sketching, I started to digitize them on Adobe Illustrator. Fg.1.1 shows my progression of digitizing my font for Junny The Husky.

Week 12

This week we show our progression to the lecturer for some feedback to improve our work. Mr.Vinod ask me to not just applying paws to all alphabet, I should play with more characteristics of Husky. Every dog has paws, it doesn't show the characteristics of a husky. Also, Mr.Shamsul says that all the small paws will be not obvious when the alphabet is type out with small pt. Hence I started to come out with some new designs.

Fg.1.2 Progression on Adobe Illustrator

I was trying to apply more characteristics of husky into the font so I started to analyze it. Husky's ear is special in dog and they are usually in grey colour. Their tail and forehead pattern are also what makes them special. Not sure about the colour but I tried to apply ears and tail into the font to make it look more "husky". After that, I feel like it is still not special enough, so I decided to add the element of bone.

After constructing all the letters, I make them black to see how they are going to look like.

Fg.1.4 Final Outcome

Week 13

After digitizing the font, I copy-paste all the alphabets one by one on Fontlab. Then I did some collateral.

Fg.1.7 Collateral 2

After I did my first and second collateral, I realize that my alphabet "k" is not done in the correct way. Then I went back to Adobe Illustrator to do correction.

FEEDBACK

Week 11

Specific Feedback:
For the first idea, Star Wars font is Star Wars font, I should not change it, or else the people will hate me forever. No much feedback for idea 2. The third idea also doesn't work.

Week 12

Specific Feedback:
Should not apply paws to all alphabet, can play with more characteristic of Husky. All the small paws will be not obvious when the alphabet is type out with small pt.

REFLECTION

Week 11

Observation:
After listening to others' ideas, I feel like my ideas are really weak compare to theirs. The lecturer sounds like getting bored to hear most of us have the idea of redesign a certain typeface.

Finding:
I think I need to think about more ideas. But if I don't want to spend more time I should continue with the second idea which is to design a typeface for my illustration husky.

Week 12

Observation:
The lecturers were giving us feedback strictly, but they are helpful for us to improve our work. Most of us sound tired. We need to work harder and fix all the weaknesses of our work.

Finding:
The feedback given by the lecturers is really clear for me and it does make sense. I need to think about what is special about husky and apply their characteristic to the typeface. This is really challenging for me.

Week 13

Observation:
I didn't attend the class this week but my friend told me that we need to do collateral for this project. Initially, I thought collateral is not compulsory but now I think it is.

Finding:
If I skip class, I need to ask my friends or watch back the lecture/tutorial video so that I won't miss any instruction given by the lecturer.

FURTHER READING

This ebook is from Fontshop but the info about the writer is not provided.

Fg.2.3 Meet Your Type from Fontshop
The ebook is separated to 4 sections which are the elements of typography, appropriate typeface selection, typographic details, and font licensing and creation. The graphic design of this book is really nice, it is very enjoyable to read.

The difference between typeface and font were explained in this book. A typeface is a single set of characters that share stylistic unity. A typeface usually comprises an alphabet of letters, numbers, punctuation and diacritical marks. Old school typographers defined a font as a complete character set of a particular typeface in one size. When type made the leap to the digital realm, a font became an electronic file that rendered the typeface in all sizes.

Then, the example of the ascender set width, X-height, terminal, and descender was shown. The ratio between point, pica, and inch was also stated in this book. 12 POINTS = 1 PICA, 72 POINTS = 1 INCH, 6 PICAS = 1 INCH. Alignment and hierarchy were also explained in this book. There are 4 types of alignment call flush left, centered, flush right, and justified. Then, the introduction of leading, kerning, and letterspacing. There is also an example shown in this section. At the end of this book, it talks about the font license.
