Week 1: Final Project Brief & Finalize Topic

We were given a brief on our final project for this module by Mr.Shamsul. This project is a group project and we will need to work in the same group as Flip Topic's group. We were given a few topics and we needed to "draw" for a topic. So, the topic that our group got is water. Water is our main topic and we will need to do something related to water.

First of all, each of us lists down the idea we have and then we chose one from each of our ideas. Hence, chose the best idea as our topic. My idea that I listed:

1. Usage of water
2. Where does home wastewater go?
3. How does water come from?
4. What if water never existed?
5. Water Mythology
6. How did ancient people filter water?
7. What is water made up of? (groupmate's idea)
8. Is human able to live underwater? (groupmate's idea)

After that, we have a consultation with Mr.Shamsul. Mr.Shamsul advise us to work on "What if water never existed?" because it sounds really interesting. But we have to change a bit about our topic if there is not enough information. Then, we discussed and split our role in this project.

Week 2: After Effect Tutorials

In this week's class, Mr.Shumsul teach us some tricks on using After Effect. We learned how to make an object move by following the path. Below is the short clip created by me as a practice.

Other than that, we also learn to work on chart animation. We create a transition for a circle and also separate the circle to show the percentage. One circle as 100%.

Week 3: Moodboard Presentation

We presented our mood board in the class this week. Mr.Shamsul says that there is no problem with our art style, transition style, color template, and others. But we need to decide which typeface we are going to use.

After we did the mood board, Chan Hee and Eunice did the first sketch of a storyboard. We get to know that we have to make an animatic which is like a simple animation. We chose to use pencil and Artline pen to draw the storyboard and scan it. We save more time by doing it in this way.

Fg.1.1 Sketches (storyboard)

Fg.1.3 Sketches (storyboard)

Fg.1.4 Sketches (storyboard)

Fg.1.5 Sketches (storyboard)
As I'm the one going to digitize the work together with Chin Han. I feel like some of the scenes don't really fit our artstyle. Hence, I decided to change a bit of the storyboard and try my best to improve it.

Week 4: Animatic Submission

We need to submit our animatic in this week. As most of my groupmates are going back to hometown for celebrating CNY, we did a very simple animatic. We are just compiling the scene from the storyboard but add a few more scenes. The BGM that I use is like funny type BGM it does make me have a sense of curiosity but fun. Below is our animatic.

Week 6: Digitize in Progress

In week 6, we started to make our final product. We separate the work into 3, assets, background and animate. First, we start to digitize all the assets. As I was busying with other work, I'm only able to finish stylize the words, numbers and few assets.

Week 7 & 8: Illustration and Animation

In fact, we were supposed to submit our final project this week but due to heavy work, our lecturers had delay the deadline for submitting this project to next week Sunday (2/3/2020). After deal with other subject projects and my job, I continue to digitize the assets. Jojo (Chin Han) did come to D'Latour (my stay) and digitize the assets together with me. Eunice was preparing the voice cover on her own during that time.

Fg.1.7 Digitizing Assets
Due to lack out of time, Jojo (Chin Han) started to animate whatever scenes that I have done digitize while I continue to digitize the assets and background. This time we were also doing it together so that we can communicate easier. While Jojo animating the scene, we found out that I made a lot of careless mistakes. For example, when I separate all the assets to their own scene, I forgot to name them. Which caused Jojo to have a hard time figuring out which is the object that he wants. The other thing I learned is when you wanted to import your AI (Adobe Illustrator) file to AE (After Effects), make sure all the artwork is in the artboard but not around the artboard. Or else, the object will not be shown on AE.

The pictures below shows the WRONG and RIGHT way to arrange the object when you want to import an AI file to AE:

After illustrated all the assets, I started to draw the background and separate all the assets to their own scene. The pictures below show some of the scenes that I have done.

Fg.2.1 Background and fishes

Fg.2.2 Background with trees and raining

After I did all the background and assets, I started to help Jojo animate the scenes. I took a long time to finish only two scenes but Jojo can really finish so many scenes in a short time. We both agree that I have better skills in illustration while Jojo has better skills in animating.

After animated all the scenes, we compile every scene in Adobe Premiere Pro. At first, we exported it it in the AVI file, the quality was really good but it is a bit laggy. Then we try to export it in the H.264 file type and we got a nice quality and smooth product. We were really tired after doing all of this but when the video is out, we feel like it worth it. It really took us a long time to finish this project and below is our final outcome. Hope you all enjoy it!
