Week 7 (9/10/2019) Describing Letterforms

This week we are going to start our project two which we needed to create our own font. Before we start our second project, we learn about letterforms. It is the anatomy of typography, and there is a lot of parts, for example, baseline, median, x-height, stroke, apex, vertex, arm, spine, stem, ascender, barb, beak, bowl, bracket, crossbar, cross stroke, crotch, descender, ear, em, en, finial, leg and so on.
Fg.1.1 The Anatomy of Typography
Ligature- The character formed by the combination of two or more letterforms.

Fg. 1.2 Example of Ligature

Link- The stroke that connects the bowl and the loop of a lowercase g.

Fg. 1.3 Example of link, loop, and ear

Stress- The orientation of the letterform, indicated by the thin stroke in round forms.

Fg. 1.4 Example of stress

Swash- The flourish that extends the stoke of the letterform.

Fg. 1.5 Example of swash

After that, we also learn more about fonts.
- uppercase/ lowercase (Eg. A and a)
- small capitals
- uppercase numerals/ lowercase numerals
- Italic vs Roman
- punctuation/ miscellaneous characters
- ornaments

                         Fg.1.8 punctuation/ miscellaneous characters

Fg.1.9  ornaments

Ornaments Used as flourishes in invitations or certificates. They usually are provided as a font in a larger typeface family. Only a few traditional or classical typefaces contain ornamental fonts as part of the entire typeface family (Adobe Caslon Pro).

Mr.Vinod also showed and tell us about the differences of all the typeface such as the thickness, the x-height and so on.

Week 8 (16/10/2019)

Recaption of last week lecture. Mr.Vinod recap us last week lecture and talk more detail about it in the class and we continue with our project after that.

Week 9 (23/10/2019)

INSTRUCTION

Project 2
For our project 2, we need to create our own font. We were given 11 lowercase alphabets and 3 punctuation. The 11 lowercase alphabets and 3 punctuation are (d,g,i,s,n,o,e,h,t,k,r) and (!.,). We were asked to choose a font that given from the previous exercise and develop or get reference from it. Before we start to design our own font, we were asked to dissect the font that we choose, so that we can understand how it works. After that, I started to do some random sketches just to explore. The random sketch don't really to allow me get an idea so I tried to write the alphabet in the font style (Futura).

Fg. 2.6 Planning

I was planning to design a font like marker pen writing but in a neat way. The Starting point and the ending point of the alphabets will be round. In the end, it looks like comic sans, so I decided to develop more on it. I plan to add a bigger dot and make it like an ear for the alphabet.

Fg, 2.7 My finalize design

After finalizing my design, I start to digitize it in Adobe Illustrator.

Fg.2.8 s and n

Mr.Vinod and Mr.Shamsul said that my design is interesting and it looks like "Shrek". They said there is not much problem for my design but the way I play with the thickness on s is wrong. The s should be thin to thick and then thick back to thin. After I got the comment from the lecturers, I started to do corrections and continue with my other alphabets.

Fg.2.9 Digitize version

After I digitize all the alphabets, I import them into Fontlab to see how they look like. Mr.Vinod reminds me of keeping the consistency of the thickness of the alphabets or else it will not look nice. And also the way I do kerning in Fontlab is wrong. The left should be all 0, only adjust the right.

Fg.3.0 Digitize version in Fontlab

Hence, I go back to Adobe Illustrator and make some corrections. And then, import them into Fontlab and do kerning again.

We were requested to type "god is in the kerning" and export to JPEG and PDF as our final submission for this project. I type the sentence out in Fontlab to see is the kerning ok.

FEEDBACK

Week 7 ( 9/10/19 )

General Feedback: PDF is only for final submission, for process JPEG is enough. We should create a serious typeface for our project 2 and avoid "funny" typeface.

I don't really get any feedback this week since the lecturer doesn't have enough time to give everyone feedback in the class. But, I got some feedback from Mr.Vinod in the feedback sheet. "Your Project 1 e-portfolio post is incomplete. You must ensure you meet your deadlines and manage your time well. Your submission will be considered late due to the post being incomplete. Please update ASAP"

by Mr.Vinod.

Week 8 ( 16/10/19 )

Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod and Mr. Shamsul say that my fonts look interesting but there is still some part I can improve it. First, the alphabet r is too long, it should be shorter, the thickness of the alphabet s can do some correction (thin to thick, thick back to thin). The straight line of the alphabet k will be better if I make it more curve since I had made it curve because mine looks like curve and suddenly straight. The second part of h and n can be thinner a bit (thin to thick).

Week 9 ( 23/10/19 )

Specific Feedback: Mr.Shamsul guided me on how to do kerning on Fontlab in the right way since I did a lot of mistakes. ( Left should be 0 and only adjust the Right) (create <space>). Mr.Vinod reminds me of keeping the consistency of the thickness of the alphabets or else it will not look nice.

Week 10 (30/10/19)

I align the word "god is in the kerning" at the center. Mr.Vinod said that the word kerning looks a bit awkward because it looks longer than other words and he asked me try to rotate the word kerning. The font for the name and year should be 7pt, Arial.

REFLECTION

Week 7, I did finish my blog but forgotten to update it, this caused my submission counted as a late submission. Again, I felt so upset and lost. This is the first time I submit my assignment late. Week 8, I realize that the thickness of the alphabets is really important, it affected the aesthetic. Week 9, I should not skip while watching the video of Mr.Vinod demo how to use Fontlab. That caused me to made a lot of mistakes while using Fontlab.
