Week 4 (18/9/2019): Text Part 2

This week, we continue the second part of text and also we were given our first project for this module. We should apply everything that we learn in these few weeks in project 1. Same as last week, we have a lot of things to remember and understand for today's class!

Indicating Paragraph:
1. Pilcrow (¶)- A symbol to show the end of the paragraph and it is seldom used nowadays.

2. Line space- The vertical distance between lines of text.

The difference between line space and leading:

3. Indentation- The increase or decrease of space between the left and right margin od a paragraph.

Widow and Orphan:

Widow- A short line of type left alone at the end of a column of a text.

Orphan- A short line if type left alone at the start of a new column.

The difference between Widow and Orphan:

Highlighting:
There are many ways to highlight the word/sentence/paragraph for example:
1. Use different typeface
2. Change the color of the text
3. Placing a field of color at the back of the text
4. Italicize the text
5. Bold the text
6. Use quotation mark

Headline within text:
There are 3 types of headline, Headline A, Headline B and also Headline C.
* Putting together a sequence of subheads= hierarchy

Fg. 1.3 The example of putting all types of headline together
Cross Alignment:
In Fg. 1.4, one line of headline cross-aligns with two lines of text type and the four lines of headline type cross-align with five lines of text type.

Week 5 (25/9/2019)

No lecture for this week.

Week 6 (2/10/2019)

No lecture for this week.

INSTRUCTION

Project 1

For our first project, we have to express typographically the content provided by the lecturers. We have to create it in 2 pages editorial spread. No image is allowed in this project and everything should be in black and white. For the cover, we can use Adobe Illustrator to costume make it, but for the paragraph, we can only use the given font which we used for the previous exercise.

Firstly, I sketch out all my ideas in my notebook. I did some research on Bauhaus but I don't really understand. I wanted to design the cover with Bauhaus style but I think I had failed.

Fg. 1.1 Sketches

After that, I wanted to create something more creative and I came out with the "B" concept.

Fg. 1.3 The Impact of Bauhaus On Modern Culture

After finished my work, I went to check the paragraph and I realize that I had forgotten the Lead-in-text. Fg. 1.2 shows the edited version, which is the one with Lead-in-text.

Fg. 1.4 The Impact of Bauhaus On Modern Culture (with Lead-in-text)

I feel like my cover is too messy and the Lead-in-text is not obvious enough and my friend told me that Lead-in-text should be obvious. I plan to sketch more and get a better idea and design for this project. Instead of creating such a complicated and messy design, I try to create something simple and easy.
Fg. 1.5 The Impact of Bauhaus On Modern Culture

After a few try out, I research again on Bauhaus just to more understand it. Also, I saw some photos/example which inspired me.

Fg. 1.6 Example of Bauhaus design from Google

This poster is very simple, he just uses shapes with primary colors for this poster. But still, it looks nice.

Fg. 1.7 Example of Bauhaus design from Google

This poster inspired me because he used shapes to build up some of the alphabets. This is very interesting and makes me feel like I wanna have a try.
Fg. 1.8 The Impact of Bauhaus On Modern Culture

Suddenly, I realize that all my design's layout are the same and they look boring. I started to do some research on layout. I found one poster that inspired me.
Fg. 1.9 Layout Reference
The way he forms the square with rectangles looks very interesting. The primary colors apply for the rectangles make the poster looks more attractive. Because we can't use color for this exercise, so I decided to play with the opacity to represent the colors.

Fg. 2.0 The Impact Of Bauhaus On Modern Culture
Fg. 2.0 was not acceptable because I was not allowed to create my own font. I misunderstood the instruction given by the lecturer and I thought we were allowed to use own font for the cover. Hence, I redo another one in the proper way.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 ( 25/9/19 )

Specific feedback: The lecturers say that my first design of the cover is too messy and my second design is clean. It is meaningless and the lecturers asked me to try more.

Week 6 ( 2/10/19 )

General feedback: Everyone should get a mouse. All the text boxes should be connected but not separated into different parts.
Specific feedback: I should not use my own font for the cover, I have to redo the cover. 12pt is too big and I should reduce it to 9pt.

REFLECTION

Week 5, I was struggling with project 1 since I do not like to read and I don't really know how to design a cover. I started this project with some messy sketches and try them out but they don't really work. I started to do more research on Bauhaus style since my previous design had been rejected. Slowly, I know more about what is Bauhaus. Week 6, I did more design this week but still, all are not acceptable because I misunderstood the instruction given by the lecturer and I have to do more. I was really upset but I know that that's my mistake.

Thinking With Type by Ellen Lupton

This book is suitable for designers, writers, editors, and students. What I like about this book is, there is a lot of examples. There is a lot of examples that allow me to understand easier. There is four content in this book which is letter, text, grid, and appendix. The most memorable and interesting page for me is page 27. Page 27 is about reform and revolution.
